Boot Fitting

You Deserve The Best!

Your boots are the direct link between your body and your skis. Properly fit ski boots mean more precision, control, and comfort. With more than 30 years of evolving experience, The Peak Ski and Sports professional boot fitters have the knowledge, skills and tools to get you the perfect fit.

Our process takes time. This is not something that you (or we) want to rush through.

Our ski boot fitters will work with you one on one in order to fully understand your skiing ability, needs and ambitions. From there we will perform a bio-mechanical analysis; assessing the architecture of your foot, joint mobility, posture and more. This information will be used to begin to narrow down the search for your perfect shell. The final shell selection will be made after we "Shell Fit" the boot candidates. During the Shell Fit, we judge boot length, shape, and overall volume to ensure that the ski boot will accommodate your unique anatomical, physical performance and comfort needs. Now that we have found the best boot for you, we can begin the custom fitting.

Custom insoles are a necessary add-on to ANY ski boot, and will dramatically affect performance and comfort. Custom insoles are the first link in the kinetic chain of skiing. They properly position the skiers feet inside the boot, increase proprioception (subconscious perception of movement and spatial orientation) thus improving balance, and allow the foot to relax by providing arch support.

We can help you speed up the break-in process by thermo-molding the liners (included in the price of the boot.) This may reduce the number of ski days it takes for the liner to form to your foot and ankle by up to 75%.

Our shop is equipped with the best boot presses, grinding equipment, and other tools so that we can re-shape your ski boot shells to comfortably fit even the gnarliest lumps, bumps and ridges.

Allow our boot fitting team to help you find your next boot, or work with you in your current pair to help you take your skiing to the next level.

Boot Fitting Basics

Ski boots are undeniably the best and worst piece of equipment. Nothing will ruin a day on the slopes faster than a cheap rental boot that was improperly fit by some young-gun rental technician in a hurry to get you out the door. A proper fitting boot will deliver unparalleled performance; increasing energy transfer, power, and control over your skis. Unfortunately, skiers of all abilities must decide whether or not to sacrifice comfort for performance. The good news is that now you can have your cake and eat it too! Our expert Boot Fitters at The Peak Ski and Sports have the experience and ability to customize a ski boot to match your unique anatomy and biomechanics. We find that an educated consumer is the best consumer. So what should someone interested in owning their own boots know about?

Factors that will determine whether a boot is right for you:

  • Length/Size (Mondo Point Sizing)
  • Width (Last)
  • Skiers Ability & Type of Skiing
  • Shape of the cuff (Especially for women)
  • Flex

Finding The Right Length and Shape

Ski boots are most commonly measured in Mondo Point sizing, a measurement of the length of the foot in centimeters (28.0 = 28 cm). It is important to note that all ski boots are NOT created equally. The sizing can vary dramatically by brand and even by model. Our boot fitters will use the mondo point measurement of your foot only as a rough guide, in order to achieve the precision fit that we strive for we rely on what is called a “Shell Fit.” To perform the shell fit we place your foot in the shell of the ski boot with the liner removed. With your foot slid forward so it makes contact with the front of the boot, we measure the distance between your heel and the back of the shell.

  • .75″-1″ (the width of 2 fingers) Is borderline too large for all those except fair weather skiers who prefer to ski slowly on green and some blue runs, or for those who desire a pure “comfort” fit at the expense of performance.
  • Approx .75″ (the width of 1 1/2 fingers) Is ideal for most recreational skiers; those who ski 7-30 days a year, and prefer a variety speeds and terrain.
  • 1/2″ or less (the width of 1 finger) Is an aggressive fit for skiers who charge the steepest slopes, ski in all conditions, and who are looking for instant responsiveness and precision.

The Shell Fit is the best way to accurately size a ski boot, if this fit is not performed seek out another boot fitter. One we have determined that the boot is the appropriate length, we will then perform a variety of other "Shell Fit" assessments to judge shape and foot positioning.

Width & Volume

The width of a ski boot is referred to as the “last.” Keep in mind that the tolerances that our boot fitting professionals work with are millimeters. The difference between the most narrow lasted boot and the widest lasted boot that we carry is around a centimeter. The difference between a great day on the hill, and sitting in the day lodge in misery can be the difference between a padded or an ultra light sock. Finding the right shape along with the right length are the two cornerstones to fitting your ski boots, once these fundamentals are met we can begin to customize your ski boot to gain comfort and increase performance.

Before We Customize Your New Boot

First, and foremost, buckle the boot. This will change the entire fit; securing the heel in the heel pocket and freeing up space for the toes. A new boot will be as tight and uncomfortable as it will ever be when it is fresh out of the box. Your toes should feel cramped, but not curled, having contact with the front of the shell. There should be a slightly uncomfortable, firm pressure around the entire foot indicating close contact with the shell. The heel should be securely ;locked ;in place, resisting movement when replicating a skiing motion. Leave the boot on for several minutes, tingling and a slight numbness will not be uncommon. If you feel sharp, pin-point pain or acute pressure discuss your options with your boot fitter.

With our custom boot fit process we maintain the integrity and performance of a tight fitting boot where it really matters, and are still able to increase overall comfort through thermo-molding liners, and our ability to very precisely re-shape the ski boot shell.

Custom Insoles

Custom insoles are a necessary add-on to ANY ski boot, and will dramatically affect performance and comfort. Custom insoles are the first link in the kinetic chain of skiing. They properly position the skiers feet inside the boot, increase proprioception (subconcious perception of movement and spatial orientation) thus improving balance, and allow the foot to relax by providing arch support.

If ski boot length and shape are the two cornerstones to custom boot fitting, custom insoles are the keystone completing both aspects of performance and comfort.
